Garden Update – Fern Gully Dreams
When I was little, one of my favorite movies was Fern Gully. I used to pretend I could make things grow just by looking at them intently enough, willing them to be healthier, happier plants. When we actually did have a garden though, I never really got too into it. Or, more correctly, I would be completely obsessed for a couple of weeks and then burn out. I remember spending hours just weeding one patch, investigating every weed, every bug. I was not the most productive helper.
Now that we have our own garden of happily growing things on our back deck, my inner Fern Gully geek is thrilled. It’s almost unbelievable how fast things grow! After a rain storm I swear the cucumber vines grow a whole inch in a day. Our tomatoes continue to ripen, vines hanging heavy with sweet promises of juicy redness. Our salad greens will have their first harvest Monday night, and the samples I have taken so far have been crisp and delightfully bitter. We have a few more things to add (it’s hard to stop!) but our porch feels like what I was hoping for- a peaceful place full of life. My mom completely validated everything we’ve done when she stepped outside Thursday night, exclaiming, “You have a garden back here!”
feerrrrrrrrrrn gully.
love saying that. 🙂
